Overview

This course is designed for clinicians working in critical care areas or experienced Registered Nurses who will Team Lead during a medical emergency. The ALS course is a 2 day course, followed by an 8 hour refresher course every alternate year.

At the completion of this course participants will demonstrate competency in the following areas:

  • Recognition of signs in patient deterioration.

  • Knowledge of common causes of cardiac arrest and treatment guidelines.

  • Rhythm recognition and interpretation.

  • Basic Life Support

  • Advanced airway management, including insertion of a LMA and assisting with intubation.

  • Manual defibrillation / external pacing / cardioversion.

  • Administration of first line drugs (Adrenaline and Amiodarone).

  • Knowledge of second line drugs.

  • Post resuscitation care.

  • Team leading and communication skills.

  • Demonstrate advanced clinical problem solving skills and clinical competence in the management of life threatening situations.
